China: Death toll from earthquake rises to 149, allocates 400m-yuan fund to aid northwest Gansu and Qinghai
The death toll from a powerful earthquake in China has increased to 149, with two person still missing. The earthquake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, struck a remote region between Gansu and Qinghai provinces on December 18.

The disaster caused in the destruction of homes and also significant mudslides that engulfed two villages in Qinghai province. As of Monday, the death toll in Qinghai's Donghai city has risen to 32, with rescuers continuing their search for the missing persons. Meanwhile, authorities in neighboring Gansu have reported 117 death.
China's most devastating earthquake in nearly a decade caused in nearly 1,000 injuries and the destruction of over 14,000 homes. According to state media, primary schools in Jishishan county, Gansu, have resumed classes in temporary tents. Local authorities plan to utilize the winter break to repair damaged schools and set up temporary structures in preparation for normal classes in the upcoming spring semester.
Additionally, efforts are underway to swiftly construct temporary housing units for survivors suffering freezing temperatures. The state broadcaster's international division, CGTN, reported that the initial batch of 500 temporary housing units were completed on Friday night in Meipo, a village in Gansu.
After the earthquake, over 87,000 people have been relocated.
State media reports that the tremor caused in extensive economic losses in the agricultural and fisheries sectors, estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars.
To assist with the ongoing relief efforts in Gansu and Qinghai provinces, China's Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management have allocated an additional 400 million yuan ($56 million) in disaster relief funds. The primary areas of focus for these funds are relocation, resettlement, and compensating the families of those who lost their lives in the magnitude-6.2 earthquake that occurred a week ago.
