Indian PM Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil congratulated Sheikh Hasina
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her absolute victory in the 12th National Assembly elections. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe sent a letter to congratulate Sheikh Hasina.
Modi congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by phone after the election results were announced and in a post on the social media X handle on Monday (January 8) night. He also praised the people of Bangladesh for the successful election.
Modi expressed his commitment to further strengthen the long-standing and people-centric partnership with Bangladesh.
Earlier in the morning, Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma congratulated Awami League President Sheikh Hasina for winning the election.
Voting for the 12th National Parliament election was held yesterday across all over Bangladesh. Polling started at 8 am and continued till 4 pm.
Elections across the country were fairly fair and peaceful except for a few scattered incidents. Elections were held in 299 seats. There were 1971 candidates from 28 political parties and independents. Votes are taken on ballot papers.
The result of 298 seats shows that Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina got 223 seats. Awami League's main rival Jatiya Party won 11 seats. But the victory rate of independent candidates is higher this time. They won 61 seats. Other parties got three seats.
Out of 44 political parties registered with the Election Commission, 28 parties participated in the elections. The acceptability of this election was being questioned in the international arena.
The Election Commission allowed 127 foreigners from 11 countries to monitor the 12th election environment.
However, the day after the polling, various ambassadors assigned to Bangladesh congratulated the Prime Minister.
China's ambassador to Dhaka, Yao Wen, met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban in the morning and conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from the Chinese leaders.
Syed Ahmed Maruf, High Commissioner of Pakistan assigned to Bangladesh, delivered a congratulatory message to the country's leaders after meeting Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban.
Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantitsky met Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban in the morning and congratulated her.
Also, ambassadors of Bhutan, Philippines, Singapore, Nepal, Morocco, Brazil also congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
